This file describes XMusic, a graphical front end to the Csound compiler that was written at MIT's Media Lab. XMusic was written by me, George Drapeau at the University of Southern California, and subsequently updated at Stanford University. My intention in writing the program was to make the task of working with Csound easier, especially for musicians with little or no programming background. XMusic was built to serve these people's needs so that they can easily write simple Csound programs. More advance users of Csound may find XMusic too simplistic; however, I suggest that those users could write simple prototypes of their Csound programs with XMusic, then go to their favorite editor to modify the Csound instrument file. This version of XMusic assumes you are running the X Window System, Version 11.3. I have supplied an "Imakefile" for building XMusic, but I have also supplied a Makefile in case you cannot use the Imakefile for some reason. To compile XMusic, edit the Imakefile and change the parameters you need to change (one of the benefits of using Imakefiles is that you will likely not need to change many, if any, parameters). Then make the Makefile from the Imakefile (if you don't know how to do this, look for documentation on ximake, or see your system administrator). When the Makefile is made, type "make xmusic"; that should do it. I've only tested XMusic on Sun3's and Sun4's, so I'm not sure how portable the code will be. I just don't have access to many different types of machines. There is a file called "XMusic.tex", a LaTeX file that will provide some hints on using XMusic. For interested programmers, look at the file called "PgmStructure" to see the Widget hierarchy used by XMusic. I welcome comments, suggestions, and constructive criticism about XMusic. I wrote it for fun and to help the Music Department people, but if you think it's worthwhile, let me know. If you have an idea for a new feature for XMusic, let me know that, too. If you wish to get in touch with me, please send electronic mail to either of the addresses below. I hope you find XMusic useful. George D.
