Keywords: Several people have been asking whether they can keep their files on gos over the summer, so I thought I'd reassure you that all 2nd year CS, CSE and MC people will remain on gos until the end of the next academic year. It would be a good idea to set aside some time to have a complete stock-check of your filespace at this point to save as much disk space as you can before you go away for the summer. Files under /usr/proj are also important, because one of the things I do to help make the best use of our limited disk space is to put old, dead coursework onto tape from /usr/proj so that the disk isn't filled with stale compilers and software engineering for eternity. It's currently 55 megabytes big, which is three tapes, and good tapes are not cheap, so any clearing up you can do under /usr/proj would be appreciated. I could compress it, but this would make it less robust in the extremely unlikely event of the tape getting a glitch in it when we read it. Don't delete it all, though; a copy of your coursework needs to be kept in some form in case the External Examiner should want to see it next June. I'd appreciate feedback on whether you think this is worth doing; it enables us to use the disk space for other things, such as the news, and I can get things back for you if you need them, though this is time-consuming. The other thing that's going to happen soon is the creation of group project directories for your third year projects. This will happen under /usr/proj in the next few days when I get the definitive list of project groups. Martin
