Subject: rn fix for 2.11
Status: RO

We noticed here that after we installed 2.11, rn no longer noticed
cross-postings, and showed each copy to us separately.

It turns out that the problem is that 2.11 inews no longer generates
the Relay-Version header. rn gets the local host name from that
header, so it can compare it with the host name on the Xref line
to make sure it's generated locally. It goes to great pains to do
this instead of just calling gethostname or uname, because it wants
to be sure to use the same notion of host name that inews has.

In practice, the name really is gethostname, and if it gets the wrong
name, the worst that happens is it shows you the dup anyway. Since
rn already gets the local host name, there's a one line fix to rn.
It may be that there's a better, more general, fix (perhaps getting
the name from the beginning of the Path) but this works fine for us.

It has been agreed that as from 1st February 1989 the Department of Computer
Science will take over responsibility for distributing the news within the
University, and for the external sites which we now feed ( matra and liv-cs ).
Could you therefore arrange to send the news to man.cs.ux instead of man.psy
as from 1st Feb.
The contact at man.cs.ux is Aidan Loyns (aidan@man.cs.ux)

A useful thing I was looking at is

	ukc/src/report_awk

which decodes the log file and reports on error statistics.

Can be a bit overwhelming, but probably okay if hacked just
a teensy bit, then it can be invoked automatically weekly.

Well seeing as you are working at a 'spring clean', how about two
typos?

The first is in the authorised file, above my name :-(

The other one is in the Pnews program itself:

>This program posts news to thousands of machines throughout the entire

That's all folks!
